You You You

Interactive sound installation with webcam-operated motion detector, spot lights and speakers
6' 51", dimensions variable

This sound piece is composed of every utterance of the word “you” in Kylie Minogue’s discography arranged in chronological order. The sound is triggered by a motion detector that tracks the audience and only plays when there is someone in the room to hear it. While the piece documents stylistic changes in pop music throughout the last 25 years, it also demonstrates that one of the main functions of pop music is to represent a common denominator among listeners. Ultimately it points to the construction of generic objects of desire in popular culture, which is evidenced by the fact that I was only able to find two songs in Kylie Minogue’s entire career that don’t include the word “you.”
