A Morsel

Cast porcelain madeleines on found metal plate
22 x 22 x 8 cm (8.5" x 8.5" x 3")

This sculpture is a symbolic offering of madeleine cakes, which reference the famous "episode of the madeleine" in Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time. In this scene, the narrator of the novel tastes a morsel of the madeleines and experiences a surge of memories from his past. Here Proust coins the term "involuntary memory," which he explains is a physical sensation that is outside of our control.
