The Drag Series

Hand-stitched sequins on felt
Varying dimensions
2011

The Drag Series takes the role of language in the making of subjectivity as its theme. These laboriously crafted word-objects perform a sassy and camp persona, drawing attention to how language is used in repetitive ways within popular gay jargon and how linguistic markers become dominant expressions of identities. The aesthetics of the flashy sequin texts borrow from the visual languages of signage, fashion and advertising, laying bare how identities are co-opted into and sold by the markets of advanced capitalism.
